Giving the notion of farms some additional thought, one may notice, at least
in western society, that the concept of a farm automatically carries the
connotation of fenced and therefore well defined boundaries. What is inside the
boundaries belongs to the owner of the farm and what is outside belongs to
someone else. We call this concept private property.
This concept of private property purports that someone can own land to the
exclusion of others and that this capacity to "own" land is not only desirable
but actually a "pillar of freedom" and economic independence. But is it?
